Planning Practice Driving

To have your teen become a safe, competent driver, he or she needs to develop critical driving skills and practice them in a range of driving environments and conditions. High quality practice driving is crucial because a major reason why teens crash is inexperience behind the wheel. The on-road license test is not going to cover the wide range of environments and challenges your teen will face during the intermediate period of licensure. It’s up to you to work with your teen to find opportunities to provide plenty of quality practice during the learner period. We can help.

Researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have designed an evidence-based interactive resource to help you effectively plan and structure supervised practice drives. Based on years of research, the TeenDrivingPlan Practice Guide helps parents create the right learning environment and to take action to keep teen drivers safe and learning:

The Guide includes information and tools from TeenDrivingPlan (TDP). A randomized, controlled trial found that teens with families that followed the TDP program were 65 percent less likely to make dangerous driving errors. These families also increased their variety of practice to boost driving performance.

Organized by driving environment, the TeenDrivingPlan Practice Guide includes specific driving goals for each environment, as well as 52 short video tutorials and a Goal Guide and Logging and Rating Tool to keep you on track. These resources can be printed to keep in the car or downloaded to an electronic device.
