There is no such thing as a car accident. A car "accident" is actually a preventable crash.

How can you prevent a crash? By not triggering one. Don’t speed, talk or text on a cell phone, drive around with a bunch of rowdy friends, or drink and drive. You also need to

use critical thinking and steady focus to make sure a crash doesn't happen to you.

What does this mean? Experienced drivers always scan far ahead and to each side of the vehicle, anticipating hazards that can lead to crashes. These include pedestrians, blind curves and hills, or an upcoming busy intersection. They then adjust their speed for the road conditions. This sort of defensive driving can help you avoid situations that might cause you to suddenly break or swerve to miss hitting something or someone.

Did you know a driver's highest lifetime risk of a fatal crash occurs during the first year after receiving a driver’s license? The good news is that most teen drivers do not crash. There are steps you can take to make it much more likely you will stay safe behind the wheel.
